Getty Images. Getty Headlines abound these days about the growing deployment of facial recognition software by companies and governments across the world to track and surveil us. Indeed, one of the most cited privacy concerns of China’s Social Credit System is its use of facial recognition software to track the daily movements of its citizens. However, facial recognition systems can be readily fooled and are limited by the number and vantage points of the available camera networks. In contrast, as I noted yesterday, cellphone and digital device tracking has already been with us for quite some time and surveils us with far greater accuracy and precision. As the New York Times detailed today, it isn’t just our cell phone companies that are selling our location information. There is a vast web of locational data brokers that track our locations using the apps on our phones to map our realtime movements with precision accuracy as often as ever two seconds.
