HCC President Shelley White made the case for the funding increase to county commissioners last week. While the fate of the requested 7.7% budget increase is not yet known, it is clear the county commissioners are pleased with all the community college is able to offer. White shared an overview of HCC initiatives over the past year — ones largely geared toward the pressing needs of a county that lost its largest industry. The college was at the forefront of many community efforts following the abrupt Pactiv Evergreen mill closure, White said, providing over $54,000 in scholarships for mill workers; operating new programs for carpentry, HVAC and plumbing in 2023 and offering a short-term program for truck-driver training. On deck for 2025 is a training program for linemen and an on-campus CDL course that will be the only one offered west of Asheville.
