Social media is full of videos of “ghost flights”. Schedules have been rerouted. And at least some fares have been slashed to try to tempt people back into the sky. The Gulf airlines, such as Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar, are rapidly turning into the most significant commercial victims of the war against Iran . That is unfortunate for them. And yet, it is also a golden opportunity for British Airways (BA) and other traditional flag carriers to rule the skies once again. The only question is whether they will be bold enough to seize that chance. We are already starting to see the impact of the Iran war on the airlines Browsing Expedia on Friday morning, the cheapest return flights from London to Sydney for May were on Etihad, Emirates and Qatar. If I wanted to stop in Singapore instead of one of the Gulf airports, it would cost me about 40pc more to fly with Qantas. There is no great surprise about that.
