Background checks were up sequentially 9% from the 2,237,496 checks in January. In a comparison to the peak demand year of 2021 for February, background checks were down 29%. For all of 2023, FBI background checks fell 5.5% from the level seen in 2022 to 29,854,176 and were down 23% from the 38,876,673 checks done in 2021. Even with the recent post-pandemic drop in firearm demand, background check activity is still historically high. NICS data is considered one of the best proxies for gun sales and has correlated strongly with share price returns in the sector.
