It is the world's most popular tourist destination, with 90 million visitors a year. And of course it is a major manufacturer of planes. By any reasonable measure, France should have one of the most vibrant aviation industries in the world. The trouble is, it has been crushed by punitive taxes and it is now falling behind the rest of Europe. There is a lesson in that for the UK, and indeed for many other countries: push flying levies up too far and eventually the industry will start to go into a steep decline – and that will prove catastrophic for the wider economy. The latest data on France's airline industry make for worrying reading. According to a report in Les Echoes this week, its growth has stalled. Quoting figures from the National Federation of Aviation Trades, air traffic is only up by 1.5pc compared to 2019 versus a 4.5pc increase across the European Union as a whole.
