Even after taxes, some figured based on their situations, they'd still be ahead by $32,000 or so, thanks to what they heard promised in the groundbreaking UAW contract with the Detroit Three automakers ratified in November 2023. Sure, rumors began spreading last summer that somehow the $50,000 buyout might not apply in 2026 for UAW members at Stellantis who were hired at a time when they could be paid less and not be covered by a traditional, defined benefit pension. Even so, many held onto hope that it all would work out as it did with a $50,000 buyout plan in 2024. Then, the official word hit in December that they truly were out of luck.
