AT&T Inc. announced Friday that Chief Executive Randall Stephenson would be retiring from the top position at the end of June, while President and Chief Operating Officer John Stankey will take over his role. Stephenson will stay on as executive chairman until January 2021. "Stankey's selection as AT&T's next CEO completes the final phase of a succession planning process that AT&T's board began in 2017, which included a thorough evaluation of internal and external candidates," the company said in a press release. Stankey came to AT&T in 1985 and has held numerous roles in the company, including as chief executive of WarnerMedia and the AT&T Entertainment Group. AT&T shares are up 0.5% in Friday trading. The stock has lost 23% over the past three months as the S&P 500 has declined 15%. The CEO announcement comes two days after AT&T posted first-quarter results that showed stability in its wireless business but coronavirus-related challenges in its media and video units.
