This represents a significant decline from the 49% average maintained during the previous decade, continuing a downward trend that began in the 1990s when US-made cars represented 70% of Canadian passenger vehicle imports. The shift comes in the wake of automobile tariffs implemented by the US in April, which prompted Canada to impose retaliatory tariffs on US cars and trucks. Despite these trade barriers, Canada remains the largest international market for American-made vehicles. The Canadian government has created some exemptions to these tariffs for automakers that maintain production facilities in Ontario, including Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors. The ongoing trade dispute has disrupted the Canadian auto sector. GM announced in October that it would cease production of electric delivery vans at one of its Ontario facilities.
