30 energy companies bid $371 million for chunks of Gulf of Mexico [Yahoo! Finance]

Thirty energy companies on Wednesday made more than 200 bids for space in the Gulf of Mexico to drill oil as part of Lease Sale Big Beautiful Gulf 1. In November, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management -which regulates offshore energy and mineral resources-announced that 80 million acres of the Gulf would be up for sale as part of President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The BOEM has planned 30 separate auctions with companies chomping at the bit to get their hands on the estimated 29.59 billion barrels of undiscovered and "technically recoverable" oil and around 55 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the Gulf. So in the first of these auctions, companies made 219 bids totaling $371,881,093 for 181 blocks across those 80 million acres, the BOEM reported Wednesday . Which energy company made the biggest bid? The answer is Houston-based Chevron, which made an $18.59 million bid for a block in the Keathley Canyon deepwater area some 250 miles southwest of New Orleans.
