The year 2025 has seen the stock gain more than most, but business conditions are actually a lot more challenging than the stock gains would lead you to believe. Artificial intelligence or AI has given UMC a lift, but 2026 may be the year that AI shows it can also adversely affect UMC and other semis. The foundation supporting the rally in the stock does not look sturdy, which is why I am neutral on UMC with a hold rating.
