Photo by Tony Sachs I came down with a nasty case of the flu the day after Christmas, and its effects are lingering as I write this, almost three weeks into January. One of those effects is that alcoholic spirits don't hit my taste buds the way they typically do — I'll pour a glass of a delicious bourbon, and rather than the magical alchemy that occurs from aging well-made spirit in a new charred American oak barrel, it tastes like... alcohol that's been sitting in a barrel. It's frustrating, to say the least, and it's contributed to a much drier January than I'm accustomed to. I've never been a fan of Dry January for myriad reasons, especially now that I've lived through half of one.
