Massimiliano Messina said the “strange” raid on EV drivers clashed with the Government's ambition to boost adoption and risked hurting sales. At last month's Budget, Ms Reeves, the Chancellor, announced a new tax that will cost EV owners 3p per mile driven from April 2028. Asked whether the policy was the right approach, Mr Messina said: “It is a bit strange to see an EV tax when we want to transform the country from petrol to electrification “If you tax something, you are less inclined to buy and probably you stick with a product for the time being.” He was speaking at Nissan's Sunderland plant, where the car maker has just begun production of the third generation of its electric Leaf model. The Italian executive, who is Nissan's chairman for Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India, added of the pay-per-mile tax: “It's something we need to discuss with them [the Government].
