At a time when the average new vehicle transaction price in the U.S. is already hovering near $50,000, any new cost pressure matters. That is why automakers are reacting in very different ways. Some, like Hyundai, are leaning harder into U.S. production to reduce tariff exposure. Others face a much more difficult equation, especially when their business depends on lower-priced vehicles with much thinner margins. For Nissan, that problem is especially acute. Christian Meunier, chairman of Nissan Americas, told Reuters that the company's cheapest vehicles for the U.S. market are built in Mexico and that producing very affordable cars in the U.S. is extremely difficult because of labor costs. That is not a small detail. It goes directly to the heart of why models like the Sentra and Kicks still matter.
