That's thanks to a National Dislocated Worker Grant awarded to the region following the closure of the Pactiv Evergreen paper mill. The grant covers education or retraining costs in 11 western counties. The grant has been a Godsend for folks who needed some refresher courses to get their feet back on the ground during a very trying time, said David Garrett, Southwestern Commission Workforce Development director. "Every individual situation is unique," he said. "We try our best to be flexible to help however possible. For people who are ready to think about their next move, we still have funding to help folks dislocated from the mill, and even folks dislocated from another company." He said caseworkers will be at a May 16 job fair to work one-on-one with those exploring a career change. "They can help come up with a plan that might lead to your next career," he said.
