Tilray Brands, which makes medicinal marijuana, said on Monday that it had agreed to buy BrewDog's brewery, brand and 11 pubs after the company was put up for sale. However, AlixPartners, the restructuring group running the auction, said the sale meant 38 venues will close, with the loss of 484 jobs. It said: “No offer was made at any stage of the sales process, from any prospective bidder, which would have preserved BrewDog in its entirety. Regrettably, a total of 38 bars in the UK will close with immediate effect, leading to 484 redundancies.” BrewDog's founder James Watt, along with hundreds of thousands of ordinary investors dubbed “equity punks”, will receive nothing from the sale. The job losses are a fresh blow for the under-fire pub sector, which has been battling higher taxes and wages.
