Danone's acquisition of Huel is a bet that the future of food looks less like traditional grocery aisles and more like convenient, branded nutrition. By buying a digital first meal replacement business built around protein, portability and lifestyle marketing, Danone is pushing further into the parts of the food market where consumers are still willing to pay for growth. WHAT HAPPENED Danone, a French multinational food and beverage firm, has agreed to acquire Huel in a deal valued at roughly €1 billion (about $1.2 billion), according to people familiar with the transaction, expanding its presence in what it describes as functional and complete nutrition. The French food group said the acquisition fits with its broader Renew Danone strategy and will strengthen its position in faster growing health focused categories.
