15 December 2025: Portal Hopes ‘Boxing Day Bounce' Will Fuel 2% Rise Gloomy speculation about tax rises in the November Budget has triggered hefty falls in house prices, according to property portal Rightmove, writes Kevin Pratt It says average new seller asking prices fell by 1.8% this month, from £364,833 to £358,138. This means prices are 0.6% (£2,059) down on December 2024. Rightmove attributes a 4% year-on-year decline in the number of new sellers in the second half of 2025 to rumours about the introduction of an annual ‘mansion tax' on properties worth over £500,000, and the possibility of capital gains tax being levied on primary residence sale proceeds. The introduced a High Value Council Tax Surcharge (HVCTS) on residential properties in England valued at £2 million or more (in 2026), which will take effect in April 2028.
